On Wednesday also we (exchange students) had the short program with all observers in the attic at 9:30 – 10:30 am and there was Ma’am Balmeo (The assistant principal of SLU-LHS) on that program. 3rd Sunday Trip (11 Feb 2018)

We went to Vigan city, Ilocos Sur. It is 5 hours by car from Baguio City. So we started leaving the dormitory at 3 am. We were fetched up by Mano driver, Ma'am Ruby and Ma'am Kath.
We slept again in the van because it was so early.

8 am we arrived at Vigan city, and our first place was Baluarte zoo. We saw a lot of animals there like birds, peacocks, lion, tiger, zebra, and so on.

Picture 1. We were at Baluarte Zoo, Vigan City

There was also a museum in the zoo with a lot of fermented body of animals and photos of a hunter and the killed animals. My friend named Danti was so sad. “Why people killed the animals and put the bodies in the museum like this, so pity the animals are”, she cried. Then our friend (named Lina) from social science answered, “Sometimes they need to do this to let young generation reproduce the new gen, so they kill the old one. They didn’t kill the animal everyday but they a certain schedule, if I’m not mistaken.” She said. Then Danti stop crying.

Picture 2. My Friend (Danti) in the museum

Our destination after that was the old town. we went around the old tow using a transportation which was pulled by a horse (I don't know what's the name), in Indonesia we called it delman. Then we dropped at some places like church, old tower, old jail and old town

Saturday, 10 Feb 2018

Math major, me and 3 others did the post-conference with Ma'am Ruby (our supervising instructor) at P303 Perfecto building of Saint Louis University. One by one we faced Ma'am Ruby to talked about our demonstration at the week before and our plan to teach at the week after.
Picture 1. Student teachers of Math major with our Supervising Instructor

Ma'am Ruby explained me about her comment of my teaching, because she had observed me when I was teaching in one of my classes. She said that I should made my voice louder, because some of the students in my class were so noisy and caused the other students didn't hear my voice clearly, but overall I was good in my class management and my topic's explanation. She also gave me the evaluation form. It was the value of my teaching practise according to her observation, thank you Ma'am Ruby.

The Beginning of My Actual Teaching Practices (Week date: 05 - 09 Feb 2018)

 I.         My Significant Experiences
Monday, 5 February I hadn’t started my actual teaching practices because the classes that I would teach still had a quiz. First class was 9D (8:10 – 9:10 am). So, I stayed at the back of classroom to help Ma’am Donna handle the class. But one accident happened when the students were doing the quiz, the building shakes for less than one minute. I thought my chair was shaken by someone but I was wrong, evidently the earthquake happened. The students told Ma’am Donna, “Ma’am, earthquake, Ma’am”. Ma’am Donna didn’t feel the earthquake so she asked the students to don’t be panic. Then she looked at the outside and the other classes but no one go out from the classroom, so the students continued the quiz. After quiz finished, a male teacher came and said that the activities of that day suspended and all students were asked to go home because of earthquake. So, only one class finished the quiz on that day.

Picture 1. The students were asked to go home because the schedule suspended because of the earthquake.

Tuesday, 6 February 2018 actually was my first day of actual teaching but the schedule was changed because of accident the day before, so that day still continued the quiz activity to others classes, that were 9A and 9B.

Wednesday (7 February 2018) I had two schedules, 9A at the first period and 9B at last period. I started teaching at 8:10 until 8:40 am in 9A, only 30 minutes because that class would have a guidance practice. Then I came back to the attic and waited for 3:30 pm to the schedule of teaching in 9D. When I was entering the class my heart beats very hard, maybe I was nervous but I could handle it. Then I taught, gave the new topic and explaining the examples, and finally the first “one hour” of teaching alone ran well. I was so happy and I hoped that the students understood the lesson that was given by me.

Picture 2 : a student is answering my question
Thursday and Friday (8 and 9 February 2018) I enjoyed my work, I loved to be a math teacher and no nervous anymore. Luckily, the students were clever and diligent so they could accept my explanation easily then if I gave them the other sample problems they could solve it. Even if they found the difficulties they want to ask me. On Friday I taught 3 classes, I gave them the drills and divided them into 10 groups and asked them to answer my questions together with their group. I was so happy because the students participated actively in the class.

Picture 3 : The students were doing the group activity

 II.            Problems Un-conferred
·      I felt a bit worry because I haven’t started the teaching until Tuesday, even my friends taught already at their classes.
·      Suddenly Ma’am Donna asked me to give the exercise for students to review the topics that I had given, I confused because I didn’t know what drill that would I give to them.
In this week, I didn’t find a lot of difficulties or problems because I enjoyed already with my activities in this school

III.       Problems Hurdled
·         It was okay if I only started the teaching on Wednesday because that was an accident that made me didn’t teach on Tuesday.
·         About the drills, I made it the night before I gave the exercise to students. I worked until night, and slept for 3 hours was enough for me. The case taught me that we have to be professional worker whenever wherever and I loved it.

2nd Sunday Trip (Feb, 04 2018)

We had a trip to La Union with teachers of SLU, they were Ma’am Lagos, Mr. Bryan Catama and Ma’am Pam. They picked us up at the dormitory with a van. We left the Dormitory at 6 am. we needed 3 hours to arrive at BAHAY na BATO, La Union. That was a place of beach, but we couldn’t play the water because the wave was so big and there was no sands, only high pile of stones as the barrier of the sea.

Picture 1. At th beach (South China Sea), La Union
Picture 2. Jumpshot near the sea

Then Ma’am Lagos asked us to play a game that we have also in our country. We called it congklak.

Picture 3. We were playing congklak with Ma'am Lagos

but near the beach there was a villa with stones as the floor. We ate snacks in the villa before we walked to another place.

Picture 4. In the villa
We went to a gallery near the villa with the inside of gallery there were a lot of unique pictures and things from wood. And at the outside of gallery, there was a pile of stones such that made a nice form.

After that we came back to the villa and continued our trip to Caba, one hour from BAHAY na BATO. After arrived at Caba, we ate our lunch and after that we felt so sleepy then slept in the villa belong to Ma’am Lagos’s brother.
Caba was a place of beach also but with sands and wave which not really big so we could play the water.

Picture . At the beach, Caba
After that we came back to Baguio and we arrived in dorm at 7 pm. Then we took a bath, ate our dinner, fixed our preparation our “actual teaching” for the next day and then slept, rest our body from the tiring but happy trip.

Saturday, 03 Feb 2018

As our routine, Saturday was our schedule to make lesson plan with our buddies. So that day we made the lesson plan at a certain class in the perfecto building, start from 01:00 pm until 04:00 pm.

When we were doing our work, Ma'am Lagos entered our class and said,"Tomorrow we will have a tour to La Union, that's a beach 3 hours from Baguio. Bring your packed lunch and we will leave the dormitory at 6 am, so prepare your self". "Okay, Ma'am" we answered.

The More Relaxed Week (Week date : 29 Jan – 02 Feb 2018)

 I.         My Significant Experiences
Monday, 29 January was the first day of “team-teaching week” with my cooperating teacher (Ma’am Donna). We had 3 classes on Monday, those are 9D (08:10 - 09:10 am), 9A (09:10 – 10:10 am) and 9B (02:30 – 03:30 pm).  On that day, first Ma’am Donna recalled the students about direct variation, then I explained the definition of inverse variation and gave 2 examples to solving the problems, after that Ma’am Donna gave another examples. That was my first time to teach in front of a big class, I was happy because my performance ran well. After that if I had no classes, I stayed in the library.

Tuesday and Wednesday (30 and 31 January), we gave the exercises to the students about topics inverse variation. During the empty schedule, I stayed in the attic room of SLU-LHS building with observers and practicumers (students of Saint Louis University).

On Thursday, 01 February 2018 I didn’t come to school because that was free day, they had no classes because of opening Panagbenga flower festival, and I saw the parade at Session Road with our buddies.
Picture 1. Parade opening Panagbenga Flower Festival at Session Road

On Friday, the students did the game of mathematics. Two of them role-played as the teachers and the others students made some groups with the members of 4 – 5 people. Each group prepared 15 pieces of 1/8 papers and answered the questions which given by 2 of their friends who became the teachers. There were 15 questions (5 category easy, 5 average, and 5 difficult). The procedures were: first, student teachers read the question, gave allocation time to answer and let the groups answered the question, after that all students checked together the correct answer. Me and Ma’am Donna accompanied and guided them to do the activity.

Picture 2. The students were doing the mathematics game, the 2 of them
became teachers and the others made some groups

    II.            Problems Un-conferred
·      On the first day of team-teaching week, I didn’t know where I could stay if I had no schedule to teach, so I went to library of Senior High School because it was near from my student’s building, but I was alone there only with the staff of library and felt so bored and sometimes felt sleepy.
·      When I was teaching and explaining the topic, some students were excited and some of them were noisy because the time of my subject was afternoon. So maybe they felt tired and couldn’t get concentration again.
·      On Wednesday, I got missed-communication with Ma’am Donna. After first class ended, I thought that she would entering the 9D class for Homeroom time, so I went to the attic to stay and waited for the next Math schedule in 9D at 03:30 pm. Evidently, she exchanged the schedule of Homeroom and Math class. So, when I entered the 9D class at 03:30 pm they were doing the Home-room time. Actually Ma’am Donna told me already about the exchanged schedule, but I didn’t understand with that.

    II.            III.      Problems Hurdled
·       Finally I stayed in the attic because the observers told us that we could stay in the attic if we had no schedule to teach.
·   When the students were noisy, I made louder of my voice. And if they still noisy, I gave them problems of the topic to be solved then they became seriously on their work.
·       About the missed-communication with Ma’am Donna she just laughing when I met her at 03.30 pm in 9D class, I asked apologize to her and she said that no problem. Then I did the consultation of my lesson planning with Ma’am Donna and it ran well.

1st Sunday Trip (Jan, 28 2018)

We had a tour that day with Ma’am Ruby and Ma’am Kath riding a van with Mano. First trip we went to the strawberry farm. It’s located in Baguio City. We liked the scene there, so we took pictures then picked some strawberries.

After that, we also visited the Bell Cruch Baguio City and then we  went to Bencab Museum. We saw so many pictures painted by Mr. Bencab and also there are some artefacs.  We was surprised that there is a garden behind the museum but still one place with museum, so we took pictures again until 12:00 noon.

Last vacation was Botanical Garden, there were so many plants we saw and surprisingly, botanical garden is near from SLU-LHS, so we made plan that we should go there after we finished the schedule in the school.

Those all were our good places that we visit that day, and we felt so happy then finally we arrived at SLU dormitory at 5 pm. Thank you Ma’am Ruby and Ma’am Kath for that nice day. Thank you SLU, thank you Mano driver :)

Saturday, 27 Jan 2018

Our schedule that day was making lesson plan with our buddies in Perfecto building Saint Louis University Main campus at 12:30 am until 4 pm.

My buddy, Mia showed me the forms of lesson plan in Philippines. They have 2 forms of lesson plan those are Detailed Lesson plan and Semi-detailed lesson plan. Then we made the semi-detailed lesson plan.

All about First (Week date: 22 – 26 Jan 2018)

 I.         My Significant Experiences

Monday 22 Jan was the first day of our activities. On that day we attended the welcoming program of Saint Louis University, in the morning we were fetched by our buddies and that was the first time I got a Filipino friend, named Polon, Mia Grail T. and I called her Mia. She is my buddy here. Also on Monday I met the teachers of Saint Louis University at the welcoming program. I tasted the food named halo-halo. It was a bit same with Indonesian food named kolak. Then that day I knew that the most famous mall in Baguio is SM and I went there with our buddies.
Picture 1.After the welcoming program with teachers of SLU
Picture 2.With some of our buddies

Tuesday 23 Jan, we had tour to SLU Maryheights, SLU LES and SLU Navy base campus with Ma’am Lagos and she told us how amazing the building of SLU because of its anti-earthquake stucture and I loved the pine trees in Baguio. Then Ma’am Lagos invited us to meet Ma’am Balmeo the assistant principal of SLU LHS. After that Ma’am Balmeo brought me to meet with beautiful young woman named Ma’am Donna Marie Alcantara. She’s my cooperating teacher, and told me that I would handle or teach in grade 9. I was a little bit shocked and felt challenged to teach grade 9 because I thought they were not children anymore. Then I learned to take Jeepney to go to SLU Dormitory (main campus) for everyday’s activity.

Picture 3. Tour at SLU Maryheights Campus with  Ma’am Lagos

Picture 4. Tour at SLU Navy Base Campus

24 – 26 Jan (Wednesday – Friday) was my observation days.
On Wednesday I attended the flag ceremony at SHS ground/yard. After that I entered Ma’am Donna’s advisory class, 9D (Mapagbigay) and I introduced myself to the students there. They gave me a warm welcome and I was happy. I got to know the schedule of Junior High School in the Philippines, they have 7 subjects a day with allocation time of one hour per subject. It’s different from Indonesia which only has 4 or 5 subjects a day with duration more than one hour per subject. I also felt amazed with how the lesson modeling is in that school because it makes students to increase their creativity. I stayed in that class until 04:30 pm and observed the teachers’ modeling on each subject.

Picture 5. The Students of 9D were doing the quiz of  Social Studies  Subject (Economics)

Thursday, again I stayed at 9D classroom and still observed the lesson activities a whole school day. The teacher of Filipino subject asked me to explain about Islam, my religion. The students were listening carefully and still accepted me although we have different religion and cultures. I love them so much. They were so nice and friendly.

Picture 6. Together with all students of 9D
Picture 7. With some of female students of 9D  (Lianne, Jhulyn, and Ashleey)

Friday 26 Jan, 08:10 am – 04:30 pm I still stayed at that class but it was my last day of observation. On that day, the students of 9D celebrated the Teachers’ day. They gave all their teachers surprises, performances, poem, paper crowns and also flowers and didn’t forget the words of thanksgiving and apologized for all their mistakes. They were so creative and so sweet. A female student of 9D named Clarence A. Del Rosario, gave me a gift of her hand-painted, and I was so happy and gave thanks to her. That was my first time to receive a gift from a student of SLU-LHS.

Picture 8. The students of 9D were giving surprise to a teacher in their class
Picture 9. A gift (hand-painted by Clarence)

II.            Problems Un-conferred
  • The first time I arrived at Baguio City, ladies dormitory of SLU, I was shocked with the weather that very cold for me. Because in my city Lampung, it was so hot and I was little bit worried about my health because of cold weather (I never felt). Also because of the weather I felt lazy to wake up, and made me and my friends go to school not really early.
  • To walk up and down the stairs was very tiring, because at the first day I used heels so it was difficult for me to step the stairs.
  • Then couldn’t find the jeepney easily if we want to going back to dormitory because there were a lot of students and teachers also riding the jeepney.
  • I felt bored in the class because I should stay and observe from 08:30 am until 04:30 pm and sometimes feel sleepy.
  • At first day of observation, I still didn’t have the lunch box so for the first day lunch, we bought in the canteen but I should take a line because so many students also bought the lunch meals.

 III.            Problems Hurdled

After a week then I could handle myself to adapt the cold weather, by taking a bath using hot water, so I accepted the weather and now I love the weather. In the morning, I always set my mind to be positive if I can go to school early and tell my body not to feel lazy. And slowly but sure, I could enjoying my routine activities those are wake up early, steps up and down the stairs, walk to the jeepney and then go to school (SLU-LHS). And evidently, the teachers and the students of SLU-LHS are very kind and friendly also warm to welcoming us. I was very happy, enjoyed and thankful was assigned in SLU LHS because I got a lot of family, knowledge and experiences. The last for problem of getting jeepney when we want to going back to dormitory, we should walk up so far and waited until get the jeepney which not full.
